Cheffins was a map publisher in London who supplied this second of the two maps included in Kennedy's important 1841 book, Texas: the rise, Progress and Prospects of the Republic of Texas.. This fascintating map appears to be an exact copy of the 1836 Mitchell Young (New Map of Texas with the Contiguous American and Mexican States by J.H. Young, published by S. Augustus Mitchell. Descriptive text is eliminated. But place names and type size are identical. The fact that the cities of Houston and Austin are also missing point to the fact that no up-date was included. The Mitchell Young is well known for its detailed information on the land and land grants. These facts appear to have been picked up by Cheffins. This is an outstanding find to complement any collection including any edition of the Mitchell Young map, or the Arrowsmith 1841. It also stands on its own as an enormous repository of information about 1836 Texas. |
