A Landmark Map of Mexico and Texas by the most influential publisher of the early 19th Century Aaron Arrowsmith : A New Map of Mexico and Adjacent Provinces(Four sheets) each 26” x 32”, London 1810Aaron Arrowsmith, Hydrographer to the King of England and Geographer to the Prince of Wales, was the most influential and respected map publisher of the early 19th century. The maps he produced were the result of careful synthesis of information compiled from a variety of sources. His skill lay in weighing the relative merits of conflicting data of an unknown area and then compiling the most accurate depiction possible. In 1810, Arrowsmith published this fabulous large-scale map of Mexico using information from Montgomery Zebulon Pike, Alexander Von Humboldt, and the Hudson Bay Company, and in doing so added significantly to information published about the region. Locations on the map appear in English, French and Spanish, depending on the source of Arrowsmith’s information. The province of Texas appears as part of San Luis Potosi. The eastern border is drawn at the Mermento River well into what is now Louisiana. The northern border is considerably south of the Red River, slightly north of Nacodoges. The western and southern borders of the Texas province are not defined. Presidio Bejar (San Antonio) is noted as Capital of the Province of Texas. |
