In the WGA III inventory -- Burr's map updated the earlier Austin with 17 additional landgrants. It is the first large-scale map to show the "whole" Texas, including the Panhandle area. It is also the first map to include an inset of Galveston Bay, completed by Alexander Thompson in 1828. The Burr incorrectly places the Texas-Louisiana boundary 20 miles to the west. This copy has also been used as a record. A manuscript map of Matagorda Bay has been drawn on the map, along with the names of a survey crew and reimbursement expenses. The location of Nacogdoches and Henry Austin's plantation "Bolivar" have been added by hand. A land-grant on the inset of Galveston island is included, as are the distances from various cities. Research is progressing to determine the author of the manuscript map. |
