The J.W. Audubon party relied upon the prolific jackrabbit population for a steady supply of meat for this group of artists, Texas Rangers, Indian guides and even the gardner from J.J.Audubon's New York estate. Audubon commented that the Texan Hare was definitely the largest hare he had seen. However, he was somewhat disappointed. Stories had filtered back from early Texas settlers, that the jackrabbit was indeed the size of a fox. Audubon talks about other myths generated from the early settlers in Texas, such as wildcats with poinsonous bites. Interesting that he was dispelling myths, especially when his father tried to "invent" a strange animal on his western expedition, in an attempt to fool Bachman. |
