Plate 82, Red Texan Wolf 21.5" x 27"
|
J. W. Audubon shows his Red Texan Wolf here with the bare bone of a buffalo for a specific reason. In his description of the animal, he speaks with horror of the way packs followed troops during the Mexican/American war, waiting for dinner at the end of the battle. He makes it clear that his wolf has only the bare bone of a buffalo to sniff, which he states "with alas? Is the only fragment of "animal matter" he has in prospect for breakfast." When traveling with several Texas Rangers, he was told by Ranger Powell about an incident near Austin. Powell had been surveying about 15 miles west of Austin, in an area widely scattered with Comanches. Powell didn't want to make noise by hunting to arouse their attention, so he brought with him. When he stopped for the night he built a large fire and started cooking. While tending his horse he heard something approaching and turned in fear of approaching Comanches. To his surprise, he saw a Texan wolf actually approach the fire and remove the ribs for his dinner. |
